Road closed after runaway caravan becomes detached from Land Rover

The caravan became detached, causing the collision

by Tom Walsh

A road in Bishop Auckland was closed for two hours on Thursday (14 March) after a crash involving a caravan.

The Northern Echo reported that a woman in her 60s was taken to hospital with minor injuries – although was later discharged – after her blue Ford Focus collided with a caravan which had become detached from the Land Rover that was towing it.

A red Fiat van also suffered damage in the incident but the driver was unharmed.

Caravanners can reduce the chances of any mishaps while travelling between destinations by checking their attachments before setting off.

Tow bars need to be ‘type approved’ and meet EU regulations, while they should also be the correct accessory for the vehicle.

Drivers should make sure that they have an excellent view of the road, both in front and behind them. If the caravan is wider than the rear of the towing vehicle then mirrors should be fitted. Failure to do so could lead to prosecution, three points on a driving licence and a fine of up to £1,000.
