Glow-in-the-dark road markings to be trialled in Holland

The road markings would show snowflakes in icy conditions

Artists in Holland are pioneering a new type of road marking that glows in the dark and could provide a major boost to road safety if it proves successful.

In addition to illuminating the roadways at night, the group has also created a reactive paint which, when covering the tarmac of the road, shows snow-flake graphics to warning drivers of the potential for icy conditions

The paints have been applied to a stretch of road in the southern region of the Netherlands as part of test run of the new system, as PistonHeads.com reports.

Motorists and caravan enthusiasts could be among those to benefit from the new system, which will encourage safe driving in winter and make travelling at night a far easier prospect.

Speaking to the news provider Studio Roosegaarde, the company which created the new paints, said that it may also help local councils who are being forced to make budget cuts.

Peter De Man, the head of the technical department at the studio, said: “They were asking, how many more traffic injuries will there be because we turn off the lights? Essentially, how much is a person’s life worth? So we wanted to do something positive.”

The developments come just days after UK campaigners urged the government to move the clocks forwards rather than back with the onset of winter, arguing that it would increase visibility during key commuting times.
