Overturned Swift caravan causes travel chaos in Devon

Huge tailbacks caused by an overturned caravan on the M5 in Devon

Motorists travelling on the M5 in Devon were stuck in traffic jams for hours earlier this week after an overturned caravan brought the highway to a standstill.

Breakdown crews were called out on Monday morning (15 April), after the caravan tipped over on the northbound carriageway near Exeter.

The single-axle Swift was being towed by a Land Rover Discovery, which remained upright despite the accident.

This Is North Devon reported that the crash had occurred before junction 30 of the M5 and meant that traffic was backed up for miles as motorists slowed down to allow crews to rectify the situation.

The news provider stated that queues went as far as Kennford on the A380, and it was confirmed that no-one was injured in the accident.

Police and highway crews were able to move the caravan to the hard shoulder and the lanes were reopened by 2pm.

The M5 is one of the busiest motorways in the West Country connecting Birmingham with Exeter.
