Caravan lovers could be forgiven for switching the TV off during yesterday’s episode of Top Gear, when presenters James May and Jeremy Clarkson tried to find out what is the best car available for caravanner’s.
Over the 20 series of Top Gear, many caravans have reached a grizzly end, and this episode was no different.
The challenge saw them testing two diesel hatchbacks, which they noted as being increasingly popular with caravanner’s.
The Volkswagen Tiguan and Mazda CX-5 were driven round the test track by the Stig, but with the addition of an Elddis caravan attached to the back.
Predictably this lead to disaster when its wheel fell off the caravan, making the first test drive end with a trail of sparks.
The second test drive didn’t complete the lap, with the caravan tipping onto it’s side halfway through.
The duo then imagined what it would be like to be a caravanner and came to the conclusion that it involves going to a garden centre, washing their car, and endless visits to a tip.
Richard Hammond wasn’t involved in the show’s latest caravan testing, which makes you wonder whether his caravan wrecking days are behind him after discovering the joys of a caravan holiday.
It was then decided that, in typical Top Gear fashion, Clarkson and May would race to a New Forest camp-site, with Clarkson driving the Mazda and May driving the Volkswagen.
They both decided to take an off-road route, which meant fast speeds across muddy fields, and ended with Jeremy Clarkson’s caravan completely destroyed, and James May’s caravan barely standing.
Top Gear came to some helpful conclusions, removing potential car choices by looking at their insurance, CO2 emissions, price, and the amount of weight it can tow.
It would be fair to say that they gave some reasonable advice to caravanner’s when it comes to what car is best for towing, albeit at the expense of some very unfortunate caravans.
