Caravanner banned for life following collision with motorbike

Caravan users should always ensure that they tow carefully

Elderly caravan holidaymaker John Banks has been told he will never be allowed to drive again following a collision that left a motorcyclist in a critical condition.

The 84-year-old was responsible for the accident, which occurred as he towed his tourer along the A249 towards Sittingbourne, Kent Online reports.

Turing into the u-turn junction at Hucking, he failed to spot biker Ivor Presland and his passenger Lucy Foreman. As a result, the pair struck the caravan, subsequently flying into the Maidstone-bound carriageway.

The 53-year-old motorcyclist suffered broken ribs, a crushed hand, a punctured lung and a broken nose, and only returned home after seven weeks of treatment.

His female passenger, meanwhile, suffered a grazed leg that required a skin graft.

Initially charged with dangerous driving, Mr Banks ultimately pled guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention.

He was banned from driving and faced over £1,000 in fines and court costs.

Speaking to the news provider, his victim Mr Presland said: “I wanted him off the road. I didn’t want him to still be out there potentially killing people or wounding others like he did me.”

Caravan users must ensure they stay vigilant of the road users around them at all time. Last month, a range rover collided with a tourer in north Wales, leaving three people injured.
