AA calls for fuel duty freeze ahead of George Osborne’s Autumn Budget

The cost of fuel is a pressing issue for caravanners

by Jack Beresford

As chancellor George Osborne prepares to deliver the autumn statement, car insurance and roadside assistance provider the AA has called for a freeze on fuel duty.

The call comes as motorists and caravan owners across the country brace themselves for another increase in the price of petrol at the pump.

A further 3.6 pence is expected to be added to the price of a litre of petrol or diesel from January.

However, the AA is calling for these plans to be halted, noting that Treasury receipts from road fuel duty show that the total generated is on course to match last year’s figure in what would be the second highest ever recorded.

The road assistance group believes that a freeze in fuel duty increases would help UK families that depend on car travel and called for the Government to focus more on ensuring the fuel industry trades more fairly with consumers.

AA president Edmund King said: “The Government would rake in more revenue if it tackled the causes of stubbornly high fuel prices in the UK.”
