A woman was lucky to escape more serious injuries after the car she was driving was struck by a runaway caravan in County Down, Northern Ireland.

The Belfast Telegraph reported that the mobile home had become detached from its tow vehicle and collided with the motorist on Castlewellan Road outside Newcastle on Monday afternoon (17 June).

Ambulance crews were called to the scene and the woman was taken to Downe Hospital where she was treated for leg injuries that are not believed to be serious.

It follows a similar incident on the M1 near London where police explained there was “not much left” of a caravan that was hit by a lorry.

The incident happened around 1pm on Monday and a man was taken to Watford General Hospital with an eye injury, Hemel Today reports.

Police spokeswoman Olivia Finucane told the news provider: “The caravan was really badly hit. It looks like there’s not much left.”
