There was a notable year-on-year fall in the sales and production of new touring caravans over the last quarter, according to figures released this week.
The data, which comes from the National Caravan Council (NCC), shows that production of touring units between the months of July and September slipped down 16.1 per cent compared with the same period of 2011.
This left the overall moving annual total at 18,829 tourers – a drop of 21.9 per cent on the figure recorded in September of last year.
Ex-factory sales over the period suffered a 15.2 per cent year-on-year decline, with 4,231 tourers moved, while retail sales totaled 5,375 which was 4.7 per cent below last year’s number.
This resulted in a moving annual total of 20,908 which was down 8.5 per cent compared with last year.
One potential cause of the fall could have been the poor weather witnessed over the summer months, which forced a number of parks to close during what is a traditionally busy period.
There is some room for optimism though with the success of the Motorhome & Caravan Show in Birmingham a clear sign that people still love their caravans.
