The lawns 40th anniversary saw a visit from MPs to find out more about the NCC's recently launched initiatives

MPs visit The Lawns event to learn more about how the caravan industry contributed £1.8bn to the UK economy last year alone

Members of Parliament have met with representatives of the National Caravan Council (NCC) and Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire Caravan Manufacturers’ Association (HERCMA) for a tour of the caravan trade show which takes place every year in the grounds of the University of Hull’s main halls of residence at The Lawns in Cottingham.

The show, which was open to the public over the weekend (5 – 6 September), featured new touring caravans, caravan holiday-homes, lodges and park homes.

During the visit David Davis, MP for Haltemprice and Howden; Diana Johnson, MP for Hull North; and Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, also learned about the huge contribution that the caravan industry makes to the Hull and UK economy. Last year over £1.8 billion was spent on caravan holidays across Great Britain with over 50 million nights spent in caravans.

NCC Deputy Director General Alicia Dunne said of the visit: “We were thrilled to welcome David, Diana and Graham to this year’s Caravan Extravaganza weekend. All three have been huge advocates for the sector and their visits gave us an opportunity to talk about some of the new initiatives that the NCC has launched, including VIN Chip and TowCheck.

“The UK caravan industry is worth £6 billion to the UK economy and supports around 130,000 jobs, including thousands in the Hull and East Riding area. It remains a British manufacturing success story – over 95% of touring and holiday caravans in the UK are made here.

“The NCC is committed to promoting the caravan industry to politicians and policy makers to ensure that it receives the positive recognition that it deserves.”

Organisers welcomed over 20,000 people to the show over the weekend, proving the mainstay event remains as popular as ever.
