Road safety group lists top ten ways to avoid winter road rage

Driving in winter can shorten your temper

by Jack Beresford

The weather outside may be frightful but there should be no reason for motorists not to be delightful to one another during the traditionally congested Christmas period.

That was the message delivered by GEM Motoring Assist this week, with the road safety group calling on drivers to try and stay cheerful in a bid to avoid some of the stress associated with winter driving.

In the hope of encouraging this kind of positive behaviour, the body has opted to refresh its ‘Courtesy on the Road’ leaflet with a number of top tips to help drivers avoid potential issues.

Included in the leaflet is a basic checklist to help drivers avoid potentially tense situations like traffic build ups, noisy distractions and breakdowns.

The code includes:

  1. Share the road safely
  2. Keep calm, show restraint
  3. Remember: others are not out to annoy you
  4. Do not compete or retaliate
  5. Be patient in traffic
  6. Set an example to others
  7. Give way at busy junctions
  8. Put yourself in the position of the other driver
  9. Say ‘thank you’
  10. Say ‘sorry’

Commenting on the new release, GEM chief executive David Williams said: “As winter presents some of the most stressful driving conditions… now is the time when a courteous gesture can make a real difference.”
