This weekend sees the first May bank holiday and for many people this means having a quick break in the countryside. When the weather is nice barbeques are a perfect way to dine whilst away.
For those thinking of taking their caravan out over the three days, the Public Health Agency (PHA) has issued a warning about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from lit or smouldering barbecues left inside awnings or caravans.
The organisation is concerned that while many people are aware that fossil fuels and wood can create high levels of CO when burnt without oxygen, some do not know the risks when taking barbecues into their tourer or awning.
Dr Anne Wilson, consultant in health protection of the PHA, said: “It is important to remind people going camping or caravanning over the May bank holiday that despite being out in the fresh air, carbon monoxide can build up very quickly in enclosed spaces, such as awnings, to levels that can kill.”
