HPI has joined forces with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to provide caravanners with advice on how to tow safely.
The reminder comes after recent Highways Agency figures showed that there were around 1,400 towing incidents on UK roads between April and June 2013.
Some of the tips include checking the unit is secure before driving, checking your extra rear-lights are properly connected and remembering to reduce your speed-limit when towing a caravan.
A HPI service called Towsafe provides advice to motorists by suggesting the ideal car and caravan combination for them to travel with.
It has been running for around 10 years, and ensures drivers know the limits of what they can tow.
Daniel Burgess, Managing Director of HPI said: “Many motorists are unaware that if their car is incorrectly matched to the caravan they are towing they may be stopped, fined £1,000 or gain three points on their licence.
“Not to mention the safety issues for drivers, their families and other road users if a tow vehicle isn’t secure or the driver isn’t aware of the dangers.”
This comes after the Highways Agency recently released a towing advice video with a TLC check-list, reminding caravanners to focus on Tyres, Load and Coupling.
Andy Withington, spokesperson for the Highways Agency, said: “Towing incidents are often caused by overloading caravans or trailers, or mismatching vehicles.
“Whilst most holidaymakers tow vehicles safely and get to their destination without incident, a fair number do not.”
The hot weather has lead to several warnings in recent weeks for caravanners to stay safe on the road, with large numbers expected to travel around the country over the summer and during the bank holiday weekend.
