Tributes have been pouring in for caravanning extraordinaire Erwin Hymer who recently passed away at the age of 82.

He was one of the true innovators of his time and founded the Hymer motorhome empire and was committed to producing the best caravans with the resources he had at his disposal.

Hymer designed his first prototype tourer in 1957 which formed the basis of creating his own company but he will be thought of mostly for the flagship Eriba-Troll range of caravans which went on to have huge success.

An official press release read: “As an entrepreneur he has with energy, inventive and pioneering spirit created a successful group and influenced an entire industry for decades and actively participated. In this case it was the proximity to his staff always especially important.”

Industry officials have already been giving their tributes of the man, with Coast Insurance stating its sadness at the loss of an inspiration to a generation.
