Caravan owners may be advised to make use of a new online theft alert facility, after a study by Club Care Insurance highlighted the low number of stolen caravans that are recovered after theft.
According to the figures from the cover provider, on average just three per cent of tourers that are taken from their current owners are finding their way back to them.
The statistic makes concerning reading for Club Care client director Nigel Coppen who estimates that some 5,000 caravans are stolen each year across the UK.
In a bid to deal with this ongoing problem, Club Care Insurance has developed the new Caravan Theft Alerts System.
Launched at the Motorhome & Caravan Show at the NEC in Birmingham last week, the new system is supported by the Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service.
The mobile-friendly system will offer a facility for insurers and owners alike to report their stolen caravans via the Caravan Thefts Alerts website: caravantheftalerts.co.uk
Mr Coppen said: “We launched this system to allow the caravanning community to use the internet and social media to report their stolen caravans and to encourage the general public to report any sightings.”
Any confirmed sightings are then passed on to police, with cash rewards potentially available upon retrieval.
