Ban for caravan and motorhome overnight stay at Scottish beach

Dornoch Beach in Scotland is popular among visitors because of its beautiful sandy beaches

Caravanners will have to find another spot to enjoy the award winning Dornoch Beach at night as Highland Council has announced plans to bans overnight stays at the beach car park.

The council decided to scrap the ‘No Overnight Parking’ sign from the popular site last year but this resulted in the car park becoming overrun with caravans angering locals, the Northern Times reports.

In a dramatic U-turn, the council announced that it will be conducting a review of the impact of this decision, and concedes that road traffic orders are essential in a few locations.

Graham Phillips, transport committee chairman and local councillor, said: “This is a resolution to a particular local issue where residents and other holidaymakers were sometimes being prevented from parking at the beach.”.

Phillips welcomes those who travel in caravans and motorhomes to visit the beach which has been given ‘Seaside Award’ Status 2012 as a clean bathing beach, but asks them to be respectful.

“But we ask them to respect the communities they visit, particularly in terms of litter and waste disposal,” he added.

Dornoch Beach is popular among visitors for its long beautiful golden sandy beaches stretching from Dornoch Point to the mouth of Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve.
