Accidents on our roads inevitably rise during Bank Holiday weekends.
In anticipation of this, the Highways Agency released a video of a crash involving a caravan on their YouTube channel which was captured on CCTV.
The accident occurred on the M1, in Leicestershire, earlier this month.
The 30-second long YouTube video shows the caravan and car snake out of control before flipping and crashing into the barrier.
This should serve as a stark reminder to all caravanners to take the utmost caution when driving.
The Highways Agency has issued a press release stating that spring and summer are the peak seasons for these types of accidents, and they have also included a list of the most common causes:
“The causes of towing accidents include overloading the caravan or trailer, a mismatch with the towing vehicle, tyres which have burst because they have not been checked or replaced where needed, and poor towing technique”.
The full press release with further information and tips can be found on the Highways Agency website.
Luckily no-one was seriously injured in this accident, but it certainly provides a lesson for all road users. Many YouTube commenters noticed that a white van stopped at the crash scene, blocking the first lane of the motorway.
This is an incredibly dangerous action and is not to be recommended following an accident, as it could cause a secondary accident.
Drivers must not stop on a motorway for any reason, but instead pull over to the hard shoulder to call the emergency services.
