Fifth Wheel lends Dreamseeker to support charity walk

by Tom Walsh

North Wales business Fifth Wheel has lent its support to an epic charity walk by donating a top-of-the-range tourer.

Walkers will trek over 200 miles as part of the 2013 Cerddwn Ymlaen event in a bid to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance.

Participants will get a taste of luxury on their venture as Rhuallt-based Fifth Wheel is donating a DreamSeeker which is fitted with all the latest mod cons and has seen positive sales all across Europe.

Charity staff have described the model as being the perfect back-up vehicle for the enduring walk which kicked off on 13 July and is expected to last until 21 July.

Eryl Vaughan, Cerddwn Ymlaen organiser, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Fifth Wheel Company for their very generous support of Cerddwn Ymlaen 2013.

“The DreamSeeker will be a vital part of the back-up squad and will be used fully for the whole eight days we are on the road in Wales.”

Selected Caravan Club sites to extend winter opening dates

by Tom Walsh

The UK’s summer may be hotting up but a number of Caravan Club sites are looking ahead to winter and have extended their opening dates.

Coniston Park Coppice, Longleat, Poolsbrook Country Park and Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park have all announced that they will be accepting visitors later than originally planned.

The former will be open until 11 November 2013, Poolsbrook will be operating until 2 January 2014 while caravanners will be able to use Longleat and Stonehaven until 4 January 2014.

Officials explained that the extended openings mean that people can visit the Power Boat Racing at Coniston which takes place between 4 and 8 November.

Longleat Safari Park will also be holding a series of Christmas events meaning that people can celebrate the festivities at the site, although it will be closed on Christmas Day.

The extended openings will allow people to enjoy a number of weekend breaks when the nights begin to draw in towards the end of the year.

Ecocamel Orbit promises revolution for caravan showers

by Chris Jefferies
A new caravan showerhead has been hailed as a revolution in caravan washroom technology, promising power-shower performance in your tourer.
The Ecocamel Orbit features 40 jets of water to provide even spray, while the AirCore technology injects maximum power into your caravan shower.
Owners of recent Lunar and Bailey caravan models may be familiar with Ecocamel, as they make the showerheads for the Unicorn II and Clubman collections.
Ecocamel claims that the air intake holes in the neck make for a shower that is not only more powerful, but more environmental as well, making your water last longer.
As a result, Ecocamel customers have reported that their water tanks can now deliver up to four showers, compared to just one from a normal shower head.
Ofir Neuman, director of Ecocamel, said: “Ideal for use in caravans and motorhomes, the Orbit really is a shower revolution.
“Its air-boosted flow solves the problems of low water pressure experienced by many caravanners, and helps make the hot water in your storage tank go further.”
Available in a choice of chrome, white or orange, the Ecocamel Orbit is available as a retrofit part for an RRP of £69.95.

Jimmy’s Farm welcoming Caravan Club members to sensational Suffolk

by Chris Jefferies
Woodland theatre, sausage eating competitions, local cider and rare-breed pigs – it’s all part of another sensational summer at Jimmy’s Farm.
TV personality and farming enthusiast Jimmy Doherty has been busy transforming his land into one of the country’s most unique farms for the past ten years, since his 2002 BBC TV series shot him to fame.
And this year, Jimmy is ready to welcome hundreds of Caravan Club members to his farm as part of a two-week temporary site (26 Jul – 11 Aug).
With so much to see and do, the trickiest decision is choosing when to visit, with the annual beer and sausage festival (27-28 Jul) proving as popular as ever, while the Red Rose Chain will be bringing Shakespeare’s romantic comedy The Taming Of The Shrew to the woodland theatre (23 Jul-25 Aug).
CaravanTimes caught up with Jimmy to find out why these events are proving so popular and what caravanners can expect from a stay on this fantastic farm.
Farming fanatic
Growing up in the Essex countryside with childhood friend Jamie Oliver, Jimmy has always had a keen interest in wildlife and agriculture.
A true outdoorsman, he gave up his dream of joining the Marines to found a rare breed pig farm on the outskirts of Ipswich.
“I wanted to do something I was passionate about, instead of think about it, not do it and regret it,” he explains. “Food culture is changing massively, with the rise of farmers’ markets and farm shops, so it seemed like the right time.”
The early years were tough, and Jimmy lived in a small caravan with his girlfriend Michaela, three dogs and one piglet.
But in 2002 things really kicked off, thanks to the BBC Two TV series Jimmy’s Farm, which catapulted him into the spotlight.
In the past ten years Jimmy has been working tirelessly to highlight the wonders of rare breed pork, whether that’s in sausages, bacon or simple chops.
And in 2012, he was reunited with Jamie Oliver for the Channel 4 TV series ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Great Food Fight Club’, which is due to return to our screens later this year.
Jimmy and Jamie are still thick as thieves; in fact Jimmy is trying to convince the celebrity chef to add a pig to his small collection of livestock.
Summer of sausages
Jimmy’s Farm has come a long way from the early days of one man and his caravan, and the Caravan Club has recognised this by setting up a temporary site for this summer.
Visitors will be able to pick from 280 grassy pitches, with electric hook-up and water – the perfect vantage point for enjoying the many activities that are coming up.
Jimmy is particularly excited about the annual sausage and beer festival, which features local breweries and sausage producers from all across the UK.
Food fanatics will be able to pick up tips on cooking with cider and beer, or if you have a particularly huge appetite, you can take part in the sausage eating challenge, in which you have to eat a five-foot long banger as fast as possible.
The current record stands at four minutes, but the winners might take you by surprise, as Jimmy explains:
“You’d think it would be a huge man, but nearly every year it’s some tiny lady who wins.”
The lure of caravanning
Jimmy is very happy to be welcoming hundreds of caravanners onto his land this summer, and he believes that there is something very noble in this pastime.
“There is something quite pioneering to be able to set off with a holiday home behind you, exploring a new place but having the familiarity of home,” he continues.
And he expects he will become a fully-fledged member of the caravanning community, when his daughter Molly is old enough to travel the country.
He hopes to pass on the childlike wonder for the countryside that he had in his early years.
“I remember when I was a kid, my biggest dream was to sit inside the caravan while it was being towed and make a cup of tea, but for some reason my parents wouldn’t let me,” he tells us.
Don’t miss out
If this takes your fancy, then the Caravan Club is now accepting bookings, but with just two weeks until the farm opens, pitches are expected to get snapped up very fast.
Prices are set at a flat rate of £20 per night, although you will need to be a Caravan Club member to reserve a space.
Len Short, Event Manager at the Caravan Club, explains: “Jimmy’s Farm is proving to be very popular, particularly over the first weekend for the Beer and Sausage festival.
“The site has excellent road links from the A14, and it’s also very easy to access to other attractions in Suffolk.”
Facilities on-site include six-amp electric hook-up, fresh water points and waste disposal, but there are no shower or toilet blocks, so make sure your washroom is up to the job before hitching up.
Jimmy’s Farm will be open to Caravan Club members from 26 July to 11 August, for more information, visit the Caravan Club website.

Dumfries caravan park devastated by restaurant fire

by Tom Walsh

Several holidaymakers have had their summer ruined after a fierce fire broke out at a caravan park in Southerness, near Dumfries.

Visitors at the Lighthouse Leisure Park looked on in horror as the blaze swept through the site destroying an indoor pool, bar and restaurant while 200 caravans were left without water and electricity.

The Daily Record reported that around 30 firefighters were called and took over four hours to tackle the blaze.

It has left a number of holidaymakers unsure whether to cut their break short including newlyweds Joanne and Paul Person, from Carlisle.

Joanne told the news provider: “I am worried that we will have to go home early because we have no electricity and the manager told us we might not have any for about a week.”

The fire follows a similar incident also in Southerness where a couple managed to escape a fire in their caravan while watching Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final.

Conned family to get free dream Park Resorts holiday

by Tom Walsh

A family that was swindled out of £3,000 by a scam for a caravan that never arrived are set to get the break they always wanted.

Kirsty and Jon Hannaby from Hemel Hempstead were one of the latest victims of an online scam which saw them hand over thousands for a second-hand caravan that simply did not exist, The Gazette reports.

It left the couple and their four children devastated but they have received a significant boost from holiday company Park Resorts.

After hearing about the family’s woes the company has decided to give them a free break to any of its 39 UK caravan parks.

A delighted Kirsty told the news provider: “We can now tell the children that we are going to be having a caravan holiday. They will be chuffed to bits with that.”

This is a further warning to people purchasing caravans and The Caravan Club has advised people to do their research before handing over any cash.

Dorchester college offers caravan park management degree

by Tom Walsh

A college in Dorchester is offering students the opportunity to enrol on a caravan industry-focused course.

Kingston Maurward College is now recruiting applicants for the foundation degree in Tourism Park Management specialising in helping people get into the caravan parks sector.

Starting on 13 January 2014, this part-time qualification lasts over three and a half years covering aspects such as strategy, marketing, finance, customer service, relevant legislation and other subjects key for the success of a caravan park.

Enrolling students will also be able to take a hands-on approach as every module of the degree involves a week-long experience in a residential unit on a UK caravan park.

Jenny Pritchard, head of CITO, responsible for the industry’s training, said: “Students not currently working in the industry can be assisted in finding a work placement to get first-hand knowledge to back up their studies, and the flexible study pattern avoiding park busy periods would enable part-time employment alongside study.”

Caravan MOTs edging closer after European vote

by Tom Walsh

Caravan owners may soon need to take their mobile home in for a MOT after the European Parliament voted in favour of proposals.

The decision, which is not final, would see caravans over 750kg being subject to regular assessments that are currently in place for cars, vans and motorbikes.

Officials at The Caravan Club have condemned the latest ruling but said that they had lost “the battle, not the war”.

The Club believes that it is a flawed decision and one that is without “supporting evidence for positive road safety”. It has also gained support from a number of MEPs as well as the UK government.

Officials reassured other members that they will be fighting against this decision for months to come and even if it is brought in it will take a number of years for it to be fully implemented across Europe.

The Club also thanked members that had already shown their support by signing its online petition.

European Commission to relax motorhome driving regulations

by Tom Walsh

Summer is a prime time for people jumping in their motorhome and heading to a different part of the UK or even hopping across the English Channel for a holiday.

As the temperatures soar on home soil those planning these types of breaks have been given a timely boost by the European Commission.

Ministers have announced that they will be relaxing the regulation surrounding category C1 driving licences, which includes motorhomes and other vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.

The current legislation states that anyone who passed their driving test after 1 January 1997 would have to take both a practical and theory exam to drive a vehicle which weighed over 3.5 tonnes.

However, the European Commission has now introduced the C1 97 designed specifically for motorhome drivers, and while it does require an extra test it does not involve the criteria specified for commercial drivers.

The UK, along with all other European countries, will need to adopt the C1 97 test by the end of the year.

Jedward to appear at Bunn Leisure campsite concert

by Tom Walsh

Jedward are set to join names such as Billy Ocean and Ben E May as they have been announced as the main act to play the Bunn Leisure campsite concert.

The Irish pop duo, made famous for their appearance on the X Factor in 2009, will perform at Warner Farm Touring Park on 28 September.

John and Edward are just the latest famous act to be named to play the concert after Billy Ocean played the site in May and US soul legend Ben E King will also be performing on 7 September.

In addition to Jedward’s appearance there will be a number of tribute acts ranging from The Kinks to Olly Murs.

Warner Farm Touring Park, in south Sussex, forms part of the Bunn Leisure complex and the concert is free for park guests.

People can pitch up or park a caravan for £22.50 per night or can purchase a static caravan for the weekend from £46 per person.

Cooking gas accident lands two campers in hospital

by Tom Walsh

A butane and propane cylinder explosion has landed two campers in hospital with facial burns.

The two women were using the device for cooking at a campsite in Nant Gwynant, Caernarfon, when the incident occurred.

Fire crews had to be called to the site last month (27 June) and the campers were transferred by ambulance to a Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor.

The incident has prompted the fire service to warn people about the dangers of using bottled gas when cooking and to remain extra vigilant to ensure that an incident such as this does not happen again.

Gareth Griffiths, spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Caravans and tents are potentially more hazardous than our homes as the inherent risks are magnified in confined spaces.

“So its important not to let your guard down and forget basic fire safety advice when on your holiday.”
