Stamford Bridge Caravan Park wins David Bellamy Conservation Award

by Joe Jeffrey

Weir Park at Stamford Bridge awarded with national conservation award thanks to its green credentials

A caravan park near York has won a national award for protecting and enhancing the environment.

Weir Caravan Park at Stamford Bridge, North Yorkshire, has been named one of the UK’s greenest places to take a break and been awarded the David Bellamy Conservation Award after being judged on what it does to protect and help local wildlife, the park’s active participation in conserving resources and their reduction of waste, as well as its support for the local community and economy.

The dog-friendly park is set on a natural island in the River Derwent and provides facilities for touring caravans, tents and holiday homes. It truly is a fantastic base location to explore the local countryside as well York’s rich history, which dates back to Roman times.

The David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme is one of the longest running green tourism awards in the UK and the idea was first thrown together when well-known conservationist, Bellamy, gave a talk to the camping, caravanning and holiday home park industries and challenged members to be part of the environmental solution and not part of the problem. Starting with a pilot scheme in 1996, the awards started a year later and have since gone on to flourish.

Glossop Caravans to hold first ever Black Friday caravan sale event in UK

by Joe Jeffrey

Glossop Caravans set to offer crazy deals and great savings on 28 November as part of Thanksgiving tradition

If you’d mentioned the term ‘Black Friday’ to someone on our shores a few years ago, they would have probably looked at you oddly and nodded their head slowly whilst wondering what you were referring to. In 2014, however, the American tradition that refers to a one-day sale taking place the day after Thanksgiving is now something that is becoming more and more commonplace with lots of UK retail companies embracing the premise.

Now, in what is set to be a world first in the world of caravans and motorhomes, Glossop Caravans are set to join in with the fun and will be holding their very own Black Friday event next Friday at their dealership in Derbyshire.

Established in 1976 by two brothers Stan and Brian Laing, who are still directing operations today, Glossop Caravans is very much a family business stooped in tradition, so embracing the traditions associated with Thanksgiving seems like a logical step. With new caravans from Coachman, Elddis and Swift, as well as new motorhomes from Elddis and Swift, along with a full range of used caravans seems to suggest that we’ll be spoilt for choice come next Friday.

Guaranteed to offer massive savings, this event is one not, to miss. A whole load of exciting offers will be advertised online from midnight on Thursday night running through until close of play Friday. Remember though, once the deals are gone they’re gone, so get ready to log on to your laptops and visit here at the stroke of midnight to pick up an offer like no other. Alternatively make sure you visit the dealership on Friday between to see what offers you can snag.

Our canine companions can do a whole host of other things though, including making us laugh. and taking us on motorhome tours as it turns out.

These two cheeky Bichon Frisé featured in this video do a great job of it for example, with some playful tail wagging action thrown in for good measure. No wonder we can’t get enough of dogs!

Have-a-go-hero foils caravan thieves thanks to Phantom Tracker

by Dan Hughes

Fast response from Phantom Tracker HQ helps stop thieves in their tracks

Two caravan thieves were literally stopped in their tracks during an attempted caravan robbery last weekend (16 November), thanks to a Phantom Tracker and a quick response from the police. And, in a story you couldn’t even begin to make up, the caravan’s owner even gave chase!

“It all started last Sunday at about 2:50am,” begins John Brown, 62, of Rudgeway, near Bristol.

“I received a call from Phantom to say my alarm was going off and was advised that someone was possibly trying to steal my caravan.”

Having been advised to check whether the alarm had been set off owing to adverse weather conditions, John looked out of his window to check on his Swift Challenger Sport, only to spot a male and female – both of whom were described as being in their mid to late twenties – breaking into his caravan.

Speaking exclusively to CaravanTimes John continues: “I was very shocked actually – very upset about what was happening. I could see they had spare number plates to put over my number plate and they were also taking tools from the back of their transit van in order to attach my Challenger to their van. ”

John advised the Phantom representative that his caravan was actually being broken into and the police were immediately notified. It was at this point that the two opportunistic thieves managed to start John’s caravan and the Phantom Tracker was activated.

“After I saw them pull out of the car park where my caravan was, I followed the up the road for about four or five miles with the police who had arrived to accompany me,” a brave John says.

The police strategically deployed a stinger device in order to halt John’s caravan by deflated the tyres and the thieves’ numbers were up.
When asked what sort of things were going through John’s mind during the police chase, he decisively says: “The caravan kept swinging out on the road to stop the police from getting to them and all I kept thinking was “Hang on, watch it, watch my van!”

Watch our video on Phantom here

Police managed to bring the caravan to a stop without it suffering too much damage apart from a set of punctured tyres, as well as damage inflicted upon the lock and alarm system, much to John’s relief, and the thieves were promptly arrested whilst John’s caravan was taken away for examination, so all-in-all a job well done.

John puts such a good result down to one contributing factor. “Phantom were absolutely fantastic,” he says. “They obviously know what they’re doing and it’s certainly money well spent. I got five year’s coverage on the caravan when I bought the tracker and it’ll certainly be getting renewed when the time comes.”

And as to whether John would give chase again should he be faced with a similar situation? “Yes, probably – it’s the belly of the beast I’m afraid,” he says laughing.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as John was and it’s apparent to us at CaravanTimes that the Phantom Tracker played an integral role in stopping low-life thieves dead in their tracks. What do you use as far as security is concerned?

Elddis provides Daughters of Davis with Accordo motorhome for tour

by Dan Hughes

Touring sister Daughters of Davis receive the ultimate gift from Elddis

The rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, with the task of spending long days travelling from venue to venue across the globe often being overlooked for all the glitz and glamour that comes with the territory – and Daughters of Davis know this only too well.
Having spent the past 12 months travelling thousands of miles across the UK and Europe, performing to thousands of people, as well as supporting well-known artists in the music industry, it comes as no surprise that the performing folk duo, Fern and Adrianne Davis, were more than excited when Elddis surprised them with a gift that would help make their travel much more satisfying – their very own motorhome.

The two sisters were initially loaned the use of a brand new ELddis Accordo 125 motorhome from the caravan and motorhome manufacturer to support them on their tour, and it wasn’t long before the girls formed struck up such a strong bond with the motorhome they even ended up naming it Otis.

The Accordo 125 became the official third member of the team, getting recognition from their ever increasing followers on Twitter and Facebook. Even musicians Bryan Adams, The EELS and Rebecca Ferguson began what became their home from home.

Earlier this year, however, the bubble began to burst – the loan of Otis was coming closer to an end as their tour came closer to finishing. It was around that same time that Elddis saw how bright the duo’s future was and rallied for a long-term answer. With some help from Peugeot and Whale, Otis became a permanent part of the Daughters of Davis’ entourage and, at the end of the girl’s performance at Elddis’ 50 Anniversary celebration party, in what was a complete surprise for the girls, the keys to Otis were handed over to them by Managing Director of Elddis, Rob Quine – permanently.

Of the affectionate bond, Fiona and Adrienne formed with Otis the Accordo, they said: “The van has been a home from home. It’s given us warmth when we were cold; shelter when we were tired and showers when we only previously had rivers! It’s given us the confidence to keep touring. Pulling up next to The EELS tour van was a moment of pride rather than one of embarrassment, which it surely would have been getting out of our old rust bucket!”

It doesn’t just stop there for Daughters of Davis though, and CaravanTimes has a distinct feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from the duo over the next coming months, as they explained: “The faith you’ve shown in us has helped others to invest in our music too which has snowballed to where we are at now. We’ll be supporting X Factor winner Sam Bailey on her UK Tour in February and we have also been invited for a guest slot on BBC Radio 2 in January, too!”

Free Caravan holiday sets off Facebook freebie frenzy

by Jo Subramaniam

Free stuff in Plymouth boosts Christmas spirit

Often, caravan holidays bring you closer to your friends and family and give you that much needed breather from work, but this particular caravan holiday has made an entire city brim with altruistic early Christmas spirit, with one Good Samaritan offering up his own caravan to one deserving family for a much deserved break.

It all started when Karl Bennett posted a message on the Facebook group Free stuff in Plymouth, offering families the chance for a free holiday in his caravan in Kingsbridge. Karl was subsequently contacted by Danna Kemp, who thought the holiday would be a good experience for her two autistic sons. The two then communicated back and forth on Facebook, resulting in Karl offering Danna ten days in April for a no strings attached holiday.

Following Karl’s random act of kindness, his offer seemed to have really set the wheels in motion for others to stand up and do something charitable themselves. An influx of additional offers started pouring onto the site, as Capricia Vogler, administrator for Free stuff in Plymouth, explained.

“As soon as Karl posted up his gift everyone started to get into the spirit of things because it was such a big gift. Even people who haven’t got much have gone out their way to give things away.”

Vogler added: “This is the first time it’s happened for Christmas and it’s gone completely mental.”

Some of the other offers flooding in from kind hearted people around the country include free haircuts from Fusion Creative hair salon, a professional photo session with photographer Robyn Dylan, Christmas fruit cakes from Kezzy Cakes, and even Tesco gift cards. People have even volunteered cooked Christmas dinners at no cost whatsoever for those less fortunate. It really does just go to show that one simple act of kindness really can go a long way and it certainly warms everyone’s cockles here at CaravanTimes.

What do you think of these random acts of kindness?

Just how fast is it to fit a Tow Pro Elite tow cover with Specialised Covers?

by Jo Subramaniam

When Specialised Covers told us they have a fitted tow cover that can be fitted in under a minute, CaravanTimes promptly headed over to have a snoop to bring you the verdict

At CaravanTimes, we like to think of ourselves as the more discerning of caravanners. When everyone else raves about a new caravan or exciting accessory, we examine it from every angle before jumping on the bandwagon, and we love new challenges.

It’s no surprise that sometimes tow covers are enough to make us wince, having ‘fitted’ some in the past only to find the process takes an age and covers tried haven’t exactly fitted our caravans as snugly as we would have liked. So when family-run Specialised Covers told us that their tailor-made tow covers could be fitted in under a minute, we packed our bags and headed on over to Specialised Covers’ HQ to see for ourselves whether it could be done.

The team at Specialised Covers certainly brought their A-game, with the Tow Pro Elite tow cover, tailor-made from digital cutting technology and, having been designed with the harsh terrain of the Australian outback in mind, surely they could be guaranteed to withstand all the UK has to throw at it.

To see if Specialised Covers have the most easily fitted tow covers around, watch our video – we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. One, two, three, GO!

And now, you can have the pleasure of meeting the man himself , and even sample some of his delectable delights – that’s right, Caravan Larry is preparing to tantalise your taste buds this weekend (23 November).

If you’re heading to the launch of the all-new Elddis Sanremo and Impressa caravan and motorhome ranges built exclusively for Venture Caravans and are feeling somewhat peckish, then you’re in for a real treat.

So why not head on down and tuck in this Sunday?

Caravanners accused of being the scourge of Britain roads

by Dan Hughes

Are caravanners really the most dangerous thing on the road?

Previously, we showed you how a recent survey by the AA revealed why Caravanners are the most despised drivers on UK roads. And now another study has shown that caravan drivers are the least popular road users in the country. It seems as though the angst towards caravan drivers will never cease… well, apparently not until we travel at the ‘correct’ speed limit that is.

A survey, conducted by Your Legal Friend questioned 2,000 road users, with just nine per cent – that’s 180 motorists – agreeing that caravan drivers were competent on the road.
As we all know, the maximum speed that a car towing a caravan can be driven is 60mph on UK motorways and dual carriageways, providing no lower speed limit has been enforced, so what’s the problem? Is it possibly that other drivers simply don’t understand restrictions imposed when towing a caravan – or simply that, by abiding by the rules of the road, we are seen as an easy target?

Hugh Bladon from the Alliance of British Drivers has urged car drivers to be patient with caravan drivers, stating: “I don’t think car drivers towing a caravan are any worse than other motorists. There are an awful lot of problems with other drivers – especially ones who get impatient with caravans and then take risks which can cause an accident,” he said.
On a brighter note, the poll also revealed that one in three caravanners think they are the country’s best drivers, with 61 per cent of caravan owners feeling happy on the road whilst half of them feel relaxed behind the wheel when towing.

What do you think about the results of the survey? Are we really as incompetent as we’ve been made out to be?
