A region which encompasses what are known as the "Home Counties", South East England can boast the countryside of Buckinghamshire, Sussex, Hampshire, and Surrey within its borders. Whilst there are many modern commuter towns within the regions that surround Greater London, the area is steeped in history and natural beauty.
Being the closest stretch of land to Continental Europe, the South East coast was once the nation's first line of defence. The formidable white chalk cliffs, castles and fortified ports lay testament the regions heritage.
Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the country, is a working royal palace and opens its grounds to the public throughout the year.
Head to Whitstable for a great example of a largely unchanged seaside town still full of independent shops and businesses, or move deeper into Kent to discover the orchards and farmlands in the 'Garden of England'.
There are outdoor activities abound in the Chiltern Hills, whilst the home counties of Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire are dotted with pretty market towns.
