With the winter months drawing in, many caravan owners will be thinking of finding a secure storage centre, even the lucky ones with a big enough driveway to keep their tourer on.

Finding a professional to take on the job isn't hard, as there are nearly 500 sites across the UK that are officially approved by the Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association (CaSSOA).

As well as keeping your caravan safe and dry, a CaSSOA-approved storage centre can get you a discount of up to 25 per cent on your caravan insurance, the industry experts at Towergate have revealed.

There are certain conditions with this, as the maximum discount is usually only offered to luxury caravan owners who store their tourer for at least eight months a year.

Even if you don't fulfil these criteria, you can still get a ten per cent discount, as the insurer's spokesman Edward Cross has explained.

"Caravan theft has historically been a major problem for the caravan industry. Our experience has been that storage is a key determinant in whether or not they will be stolen," he said.

"Using our experience of insuring over 30,000 caravans per year, we are satisfied that any CaSSOA site will satisfy certain minimum security criteria, and consequently your caravan will be much more secure there than they would be anywhere else."

What's more, his words are firmly backed up by statistical evidence, as a recent government study found that nearly half of caravans stolen in the UK were taken from private driveways, while a further 45 per cent were taken from service stations and holiday parks.

The number stolen from caravan storage centres? Just five per cent.
