This year more and more Britains have faced down the recession with defiance through choosing to rediscover the country on a budget. The great British staycation seems an unlikely choice however for a Premiership footballer. With millions a year in wages and endorsements he is more likely to be seen vacationing in New York than Newquay.
Rio Ferdinand has always been known for loving the 'bling' in life. The Manchester United and England star took delivery of a Porsche Cayenne earlier this year. The vehicle was specially customised for him by TechArt and forms part of a stable of exotic cars.
Yet as part of this summer's vacation the world's most expensive defender quietly took a top-of-the-range caravan for a weekend and managed to completely avoid the paparazzi. Forgoeing the usual four-figure a night sums spent on lavish hotel suites by Premiership stars, Rio took a break at the Haven Holidays caravan park at Prestatyn in north Wales.
Accompanied by his fiancee Rebecca Ellison, 29, and their two sons Lorenz (three) and Tate (one) the British 'staycation' formed a stark contrast to his last holiday. Earlier this summer the injured England centre-half took a lads holiday to Tel Aviv in Israel, where he stayed in luxury in a hotel with a rooftop pool.
Rio Ferdinand's more usual home is a £5million mansion in the Alderley Edge area of Cheshire, famed for footballers and pop star residents. This evening due to a thigh injury he will be reduced to the part of spectator as England take on Croatia at Wembley. The match is a qualifier for the World Cup in South Africa next year.
